Ever wondered why Newborn Photography is costly?
Becoming a parent is one of the most beautiful things the world has to offer. From the moment you lay your eyes on your newborn child, you know you want to remember every single detail of that moment. That's when newborn photography comes in handy - it captures the most endearing moments of your child's early life. But have you ever wondered why getting those beautiful portraits of your little one comes with a hefty price tag? In this blog post, we will explore the real price of newborn photography and what factors contribute to its high cost.
Below lists various reasons why the real price of newborn photography can be relatively pricey:
1. Specialised Skills and Expertise:
Newborn photography requires a unique set of skills and expertise. A professional newborn photographer has undergone specialised training to safely handle and pose newborn babies, ensuring their comfort and well-being throughout the session. The photographer's experience and expertise in capturing those precious, fleeting moments of a newborn's early days contribute to the value of their work.
2. Extensive Equipment:
Newborn photography demands specific equipment to achieve high-quality results. This can significantly add to the cost. Photographers invest in professional-grade cameras, lenses, lighting equipment like soft boxes, diffusers, reflectors, and props designed specifically for newborn photography, like baskets, blankets and headbands. The cost of acquiring and maintaining this specialised equipment adds to the overall pricing.
3. Time and Patience:
A newborn photography session is not a quick process. It requires a significant amount of time and patience to create those beautiful images. The photographer spends time setting up the props, adjusting lighting, and ensuring the baby's comfort. They also need to be flexible and allow for breaks or feeding times, as newborns have their own schedule.
4. Safety Measures:
Newborn safety is of utmost importance during a photography session. Professional newborn photographers adhere to strict safety protocols to ensure the well-being of the baby at all times. This includes knowledge of safe posing techniques, proper sanitization of props, and constant supervision. The cost associated with maintaining a safe environment for the baby is reflected in the pricing.
5. Props and Accessories:
We mentioned props already, but they add a significant chunk to our expenditure, so I think it’s worth going into details here. Newborn photography often involves the use of various things, like wraps, and accessories to create beautiful setups and themes. These props are carefully selected, purchased, and maintained by the photographer. The investment in a diverse and high-quality prop collection adds to the overall cost. If you consider the majority of items we have come in various colours, to make sure all our sets match, this will start to paint a picture not only of our storage area, but of our expense account. And not all props are born equal! Just like with everything in life, they come from different sources, and since we only want the best for you, the ones you see at our studio are mostly handmade, with an average order time of 6-8 weeks. They come from prop vendors and specialists based in various parts of the world. Some are hand stained, some are hand crocheted, some are completely bespoke and made to order (so if at any point you would like to have an item that is really specific to your session, always always talk to us about it as we can usually make your dream a reality!)
For newborn photography specialists, there’s another thing to consider: baby outfits don’t last as long as grown up outfits, especially with the dinkiest bums being extra explosive and hand washing (as most of those items will be hand wash only) quickly destroying some of the delicate fabrics, we have to buy a lot of those and they don’t last a long time, before looking a little grubby.
6. Business Expenses:
Like any other business, newborn photographers have expenses such as studio rent, utilities, insurance, marketing, and professional memberships. These costs are factored into the pricing to ensure the sustainability and growth of the photography business. Another factor we should consider is the cost of training for photographers. With most group workshops ranging from £250 to £1000 per person for a day, this cost also needs to be covered by the business.
It's important to remember that when hiring a professional newborn photographer, you're not only paying for their time during the session but also their experience, expertise, and the value they bring to creating timeless memories of your newborn. Their work doesn’t finish when they stop pressing the shutter. It only just begins in most cases. The pricing reflects the level of service, quality of work, and the dedication that goes into providing a safe and exceptional photography experience for both the baby and yourselves: the parents.
